I'm in a similar position, not being able to pull the trigger on a quad of MJ-18"s this week - but maybe soon. Would be very interested in an indication of pricing dropped in Australia (or even better - New Zealand)?

Mark, I'm thinking of going for the Jaycar units as well but won't be ready to buy for a few weeks yet, so the GB for the MJ-18's doesn't look like it will happen. Thanks for the heads up though. That's ok. If I were you I'd do the same thing. Picking this stuff is always a personal thing isn't it... Whatever you guys decide to go with I'm sure it will be a good one! Best regards to all, Mark

I'd say there's probably interest on both our parts, but we'd (well, me anyway!) would just want to know what we'd be up for $-wise before we confirmed 100%. I don't have a problem paying more to get a better driver than the Jaycar, but as to how much more, well, that'll be a matter of judgment I guess.

That site seems to list their X-Max peak to peak rather than one way in most cases, which would give that driver only an 8mm one way X-Max. The TIW 300 - 8 Ohm is the only one that I saw that lists it's X-Max one way + - 16.

I'm no expert, but a quick test in winisd shows that even with the huge efficiency of the BGS 40, the Jaycar 15" beats it below 50Hz.

Says Thomas W: "With a 10X Vas or larger IB sub, the drivers Qts = the Qtc, since the influences of the box are mimimal. So I recommend starting off with drivers having a Qts as close to 0.5 as possible."
So the Jaycar driver is spot on for Qts.

I found the only 15" or bigger drivers avail in Melb at short notice were the Venom 15 from Jaycar and the (new) Tempest 15D8. So purchased the Tempests. Despite close to 4x more, I went for the 15D8 as wasn't prepared to build and install a manifold to put drivers in just because they were cheap. If there'd been some 15" avalanches avail they would have been chosen no matter what

Unfortunately 4x more would put the whole project completely out of reach, especially as I'm considering trying to slip 8 drivers in, so the Jaycar I reckon it'll be.

Fair enough Thudd - would love to help you but it appears you live 4000km away in Perth? 8 x15" will have awesome air moving potential - excellent! Please highlight pictures/drawings where the possible location will be

It'll depend on war office acceptance of a manifold that big of course! That's what I'll be pushing for though Location will be front & centre in the new room directly between where the mains will go.

With 8 x 15s and so much interest in North Korea at the moment your plans are probably being closely monitored already. Your manifold might even be visible on Google Earth if you do your construction outside! ;D

Just show her the other option - a line array of 8 across the front Then she'll be so happy you are going to hide them in a manifold instead (will it be wall, floor or ceiling mounted?)

A line array, hah, that'd end up venting to the outside a la the Cowan Audio beast. Too difficult I reckon.
I'm thinking though given the apparent success of your dual setup Norpus whether to go 4x15" x 2, one up front and one up back, both mounted in the ceiling. If nothing else it'd make the boxes more manageable weight wise, spread the load around and be easier to integrate the manifold into the ceiling - and then I can join the multiple IB cult!
Besides, she wants to spend $1500 on a water feature so I can use that as ammunition to spend a similar amount on buying woofers and amps <evil maniacal laugh>
The builder will be around in a couple of days to sign the contract for the room construction so we're just about ready to go, the dream finally starting to be realised.

The greater the number of boxes the more complicated the dialing in process (phase, EQ, etc)
