I'm helping a friend with his IB. This is the 5th IB for me, but the
first attic install. He wants to insulate around the 2 driver
manifold with fiberglass on the top and sides and netting
to keep the insulation away from the driver sides. My question is
how far from the driver should he keep the fiberglass?

Don't know a 'distance' since there are variables, density of insulation, how much is used, etc., etc..
It should be placed at a distance where it has minimal impact on the rearwave. Start with 3'-4' away..

I think he's going to use the netting and fiber glass to keep the
blown in insulation away from the sub. It sounds like the amount
of blown in will be quite substantial.

I showed my friend this thread and here's what he came up with: The netting is as tall and as wide as the manifold and ends 4 feet behind each driver. He used paper-backed insulation. Will the paper hinder the rear wave? Should he remove some of the paper?

What a nightmare... Your friend needs to do a little research as to how heat moves and the appropriate way to install fiberglass batts....(hint one doesn't have rows of tall batts separated by valleys only as high as the joints.) Regarding the so called 'IB', he doesn't have one. My best guess is that he's created some bizarre form of aperiodic box. I have no idea how it will perform.

The insulation is only to keep the blown in insulation away from
the drivers. It was hard to get good pics but in the first one he
clearly has plenty of room (4ft) directly behind the drivers. I tried
to explain to him the idea behind an IB is no restrictions for the
rear wave. What can I tell him to make it work better?

I'd get rid of the paper. It might wind up sounding like someone hyperventilating with a bag on their face.

Yep, I had him remove all the paper and pull off as much insulation as possible and still keep the blown insulation out.
Last time I was there the ceiling was rocked but no insulation. I hooked up the ep2500 to the 4 AEIB 15's. This is the first IB that underwhelmed me with it's output, next visit I will trouble shoot.

Well, I was finally able to get over to his house and hook up all his equipment. Fired up the sub.......not underwhelmed any more! His favorite demo movie clip is open range gun fight. My chest and stomach were just pounded with every shot. He's happy.
