I'm running stereo 2 ohm with 2 avalanche 18 on each channel.
After say an hour or two of any regular movie, which only has bass here and there, the amp is burn-your-hand hot where the heatsink is (middle/right where the 4 screws are).
I've reversed the fan so it blows out and the air coming out the back is pretty warm too. The unit hasn't ever shut down but it seems too hot for what is mostly idle operation.

No they don't normally run that hot.
You could try rewiring so you have a 4 ohm mono load. I don't know if that will change anything.
IIRC you have a tendency to play things pretty loud?
If you turn it on with no signal going to it, and an hour later it's too hot to touch, there's ...
1) a problem with the amp 2) a problem with the wiring 3) a problem with the drivers
BTW, for diagnostic purposes I'd change the fan so it's blowing in the stock direction

2 Ohms is too much like hard work for most amps. If you have 2 drivers on each channel then just wire each pair in series per channel. Assuming 4 Ohms per driver you'll have an easy load of 8 Ohms per channel. You may lose a few dB but this can be boosted back up elsewhere. If the 2500 control knobs are presently below maximum just turn them up. You can also increase output via your AVR settings.
I ran 3 x action DVDs back to back last night. I felt the 2500 after 6 hours of very loud fun. The case was still as cold as ice despite the quiet fan mod. I have 4 Ohms per channel.

Dual 2 ohm coils
So-
series coils, 4 ohms, then
series drivers, 8 ohm load - only 450w/ch parallel drivers, 2 ohm load
Not many options.

Mine does not get very hot and I also have reversed the fan direction. When Running extended bass tests at 110 db+ I get a smell of burning electronics after a couple of min. So far nothing has quit yet.....

jman,
I have the same 2 X 2 ohm voice coils on my four 18's, and have them configured at 2 ohms per channel on my EP 2500.
I have not done any fan mods yet, so still rear to front ventilation. Even after some "vigorous" sessions, whilst I can hear that the fan speed has increased, the exhaust air is barely above ambient, and the case is still cool.
If I were you, I would reverse the fan direction and see what happened.
Cheers, Jim.

Reversed the fan last night and listened to music for about 20 minutes; it seemed to stay cold. I'll watch a few loud movies today.
With it reversed, perhaps the draw wasn't coming fully from the heatsink and more from the case in general.
The cooling design is not ideal though. In a dusty environment the front filter would clog eventually.

Fine now. Stone-cold even after a 120db "skidooshing" from Kung Fu Panda.

Fine now. Stone-cold even after a 120db "skidooshing" from Kung Fu Panda. Hmm. I'm running 2.75 ohm load/channel in my EP2500, plus I did a fan mod to quiet it. Re: 5.5ohm 1/5.5 + 1/5.5 = 1/R(e) = 0.3636 R(e) = 2.75 ohm load Mine runs warm only after extended times, say 2+ hours, never hot. The "attenuation knob" is at 12 oclock. Hopefully your amp is not going and you've solved the issue. That "skidooshing" never gets old, does it?

I've been driving my 4 18's for several years wired at 2 Ohms and have never had a heat issue. Stock fan.

Yesterday my wife says she heard a pop when she turned off the system. So I'm downstairs last night and I notice one channel of the ep2500 has the clip light on steady. I unplugged inputs and outputs but the light stays on. The amp has been running 8ohms stereo for 4yrs without a hiccup till now

Hi Brady it's normal for ep2500's to do a small pop after you turn them off and the clip lights stay on while the unit discharges power........that being said yours might be doing something different, is it still working ok? l run mine bridged 4ohms, does'nt get hot , my fan is reversed as well plus l put in a quieter one which doesn't move as much air....also it doesn't run full time as l had a mate at work make me a thermal switch which operates on about 40c? from memory , so during quieter movies the fan only comes on every few minutes rather than more often on more demanding stuff......works a treat cheers ken

Hi Ken
No, that channel just makes the speaker hum. I haven't had a chance to go any further. I ordered another ep2500 because if it needs to be fixed, the repair shop takes forever to fix stuff. I figure, given it's price, 4 years of service is just alright with me.

Ok, sounds like a workshop visit is needed then, good move on grabbing another ep2500 , as you said they are great value and 4 years is'nt a bad run considering , l've had mine about the same length of time too , though it only gets used once a week probably on average.......eldest daughter keeps turning it off me if l do use it after 9pm as it ( the IB ) shakes her bed/room/stuff and drives her mad ....... fair call ;D

If you turn the amp off before the receiver you don't. The amp should be the last thing turned on and the first thing turned off when you're powering your system.
