Hey guys, I started a "which sub for me" over here www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1163452and IB was recommended for my setup, and it does make sense. To the left of the TV, behind the wall, is a staircase, that's open underneath. It's all covered by drywall, and when working from the room, I'm obviously limited by the width of the studs. No real easy way into the open area, that I see. So my question is, can you install a IB setup from the room, if you don't have easy access to the area where the sub will be placed? Wanted to get this question out of the way, before I really started to investigate the entire IB arena. Thanks in advance! Aaron

Hi,
If you fire the rear wave into a stairway the entire area will be filled with bass. That's probably not a good idea.
What's the deal with the pantry? Is it packed with stuff? Would the Mrs let you use it for an IB?

Thanks for the reply, Thomas.
Yeah, pantry is in full use and packed. It's a smaller one (just barely a walk in) and no chance the wife would give that up.
I'm obviously showing my IB design ignorance here, but if I put the IB "box" under the stairs, and then put the vent/opening pointing into the room behind the left speaker, I'm guessing that wouldn't get the sound where I want it? (like in post #19 in that AVS thread?)
Would it help any to show the staircase from the other side?

When you say "under the stairs" what does that mean?
Is there a stairway/stairwell open to the rest of the house or a separate closed off area?

I wish I had known to take better pics before all of the work was done. But here is one I found. This is the wall that the TV is now on. The speaker/cat5/coax wires are in the middle of that wall. To the right, you can see what now is the pantry. To the left of that, however, is an open space, which is underneath our stairs to the 2nd floor. The space is MAYBE accessible by crawling under the house, but I'm not even sure about that and don't really want to find out. Also, here's a pic of the wall the TV is on (from the back side)

As long as the space is reasonably sealed off it's fine for an IB. You'll probably want to line it with some fiberglass batting to help kill the rear-wave.
Now it's just a matter of figuring out the joist spacing, etc and the best approach to putting in the IB.
Is there a budget for this project?

Sealed off, huh. I am pretty sure its open to the entire crawl space under the house. Not that it couldn't be sealed off by a floor of some sort, but with minimizing drywall cutting and patching, sealing that off and building a setup in there looks pretty nasty.
Budget would be probably $750, give or take. That's what I had planned to spend on a box subwoofer. If I had thought about this before all of the walls were up, this sure would have been a whole lot easier, it appears.

You are probably much better off with the under-stairs floor being open to the crawl space. This will increase your enclosure volume dramatically provided it really is wide open to the crawl space.

Budget would be probably $750, give or take. That should be enough for two Fi 18's and a Behringer EP2500. What do you have for tools? You may have to stretch that budget a little.

Tools are covered - no worries there. Woodworking is another hobby of mine. Although I wonder if I can buy a cloaking device for that budget. I need something that will make the mess this project could potentially generate invisible to the wife. Ok, I'll do some thinking and reading and see where this goes. I'm just worried that I'm going to have to cut a few big holes in the wall to even see if this thing is feasible or not.

Stud finder might help quickly tell you what your stud spacing is.

Studs are 12" on center, or there abouts........
I was able to mount my TV on the 48" mount hitting 4 studs across. Not much room to get in there and work, that's for sure.

Sealed off, huh. I am pretty sure its open to the entire crawl space under the house. I was referring to sealed off from the living area. The larger the space behind the subs the better. You might spend some time looking at the various Picture Gallery pages and the Generic Design/Build/Install FAQ pages.
