Hi.
I've just received my AE IB12 drivers. I'm using them in an OB rather than IB, but I figured there was more experience here than elsewhere.
I'm in the process of installing them, but am a bit worried. I bought the IB12s in large part because of the 18.5mm xmax.
However, on examining the drives I'm not sure that this a valid figure. I've always thought that the quick way to check xmax is to simply look at the roll surround.
I would expect a driver with 18mm xmax to have a larger surround than one with 14mm. However, my current drivers (Adire DPL12) have a much bigger roll than the IB12s.
So, for those who use the IB15, is it delivering the xmax advertised? Or is that 18.5mm that AE list in the T/S parameters in fact p-p rather than one way?
Or am I being paranoid.
Thanks

Don't know if you're being paranoid or not. Don't know anyone who's independently verified JohnJ's T/S specs.
I don't have a link but Linkwitz has a diagram for a DIY paper based device to measure Xmax somewhere on his website

I've never had any reason to doubt the xMax of my IB15s though Fs has wandered from spec in the past. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5l5m8C5HgIUse REW to play a 10hz sinewave through an audio amp and your driver. Now watch the voice coil moving through the basket ventilation holes around the spider as you very gently increase the volume on your amp. Stop when you are satisfied you are getting your money's worth Preferably without destroying the driver. . If you are using 12" drivers you had better have at least 8 for safety.
