I have an IB with 4 FI18" IB drivers. It works great but I had to put my front row of seats basically in the center of the room. They are 13' back from a 27' long room. I cant move them forward or back. They are on a riser and the second row is on a 2 step riser. The room is 15' wide and the riser goes wall to wall. It has a lot of volume. Sitting in the 2nd row the bass is so violent my wife and kids wont set back there. I do occasionally. It is set with audyssey and it sets it this way because the front row bass is much weaker. The bass sounds good in the front row but I know what is going on behind me. I knew the first row location would be a problem but there was no way around it. I started thinking I would put a 12" driver under each front row seat and use the riser as an IB enclosure to balance out my room. They would be nearfield so wouldn't require as much output. Bass in the room is great except for the front row. The from row riser is 8" tall and open to the rest of the riser so its a pretty big enclosure. My 18"FI drivers only have about 9" behind the driver so a 12 should fit fine. What would be the best driver for this application?

Sorry but what I meant to say about the 9" behind the FI driver is the amount the basket and cage stick out. My Ib has a large room behind it.

Hi,
My guess is there's a room node (peak) where the wife doesn't want to sit. Makes more sense to control those with bass traps instead of adding more drivers into the mix.
In order to know what we're dealing with we need to see some plots of the sub's output measured from different places in the room.

Actually the bass is strong all over the room except at the front row seats. Audyssey turns the bass up because the front row is the first mic position then I give a little more boost to the subs so the first row has good bass. The first row is where we sit. When the bass sounds strong at the first row then anywhere else in the room Is basically being torn apart with so much bass. You can see the projector vibrating during big sounds. I probably didn't explain it well. When I plug the Audyssey mic in it wants you to set the sub to 75 db and displays how loud the sub is. I move the mic around and the back row and 3' in front of the front row are both about 10-12 db louder than the front row. I do have bass traps using 8# Rockwood across all corners. Front corners, rear corners and ceiling wall corners. Its just a big null from where the wave bouncing off the back wall is canceling the bass in the middle of the room.

Its just a big null from where the wave bouncing off the back wall is canceling the bass in the middle of the room. And the frequency of the null is ? How deep (thick) are your corner bass traps, 24" or more ?

They are 32" wide and they straddle the corners. I'm not sure what frequency the null is but it is extremely noticeable. I had given up on REW since I got audyssey xt32. Audyssey did just as good of a job and is so much easier. I guess I'll have to dig that stuff back out to measure what's going on.

Yeap I understand the attraction of things like Audyssey, but there are times when we need to see specifics in order to solve a problem. This is one of those times...
