Are there any rules of thumb to minimize the ability of neighbors hearing the bass, assuming you're building from scratch i.e. a blank canvas.
I was thinking a basement with concrete walls, with the IB backing into another large volume sealed room?
I guess I'm thinking that if I could stop the sound waves from venting to atmosphere then the sound wouldn't travel as much, and if it is underground then it might block / dampen the vibrations from the theater room.

Both my IBs are loaded to the basement and fire into rooms above. They're no louder than a box sub in the listening rooms.
If both front and rear waves are contained in the basement no neighbor is going to know an IB exists

I had a similar question as well. I'm looking at having 2 18 inch IB speakers in our roof space, which isn't sealed. Wondering how much noise is likely to leak out from the between all the concrete tiles. We're in a standalone house but our neighbors are quite close, perhaps <10m between the sides of the houses.
Does anyone else here have an IB installation in a roof space with concrete tiles that can comment?
Thanks!

Do you have an existing sub? Maybe put that in the attic for a test.

The IB uses a poorly sealed, glazed, gable end room for its enclosure. The SVS was in an adjoining, sealed attic room which the IB also "fires into." Both attic rooms have 12" of rock wool on the sloping ceilings. You will probably have some thermal "woolly" insulation in the roof space. This will help to absorb sound by multiple reflections over a wide area. The deeper you make the insulation the warmer you will be and the more LF sound will be absorbed. You cannot cover the IB or it will no longer function as an IB.

You will be fine. I have 2 24s in my attic space and when it gets really intense you can hear it in the garage and about 10 feet or so out the driveway, but even then only because I know what's happening. In movies the subs are not putting out continuous bass like music. I know some have complained or talked about people getting upset etc but I would think the issue is more in apartments and town home environment more than a development where the houses are 30 ft apart. But being just the tiniest bit sensitive when your producing extremely loud bass levels goes a long way. Like not blowing the place up at 1am etc. Ive never had a neighbor say anything even when my son and his buddies are causing the house to make weird noises due to the intensity of the ib
