Spoke to Chad today, and he said that in a couple of months there will be an inexpensive 18" subwoofer which he claims will be specifically for IB... something in between the old Atlas and Avalanche lines. It will have 18 mm Xmax.
When I compared to the Avalanches 27 mm Xmax, he explained, (if I understood correctly) that you dont need that extra Xmax, because this 18 mm Xmax would get you 19 or 20 Hz at about 120 Db. (which he claimed was really loud.) he kept mentioning tests in different size boxes...
The mention of DVD's with lower frequencies at loud volumes didnt interupt his line of thought.
So, I wonder if anyone with a bit of IB knowhow can chime in and tell me if all this makes any sense??

An inexpensive 18" is VERY interesting news. I'm not sure I understand the explanation though......
19-20Hz at 120dB is very loud = ear damage

I am glad to hear this news. IB specific 18's sound like a great idea to me. I am waiting for AE to start shipping again or for something better to come along. Look at most the driver on the recommended list. 18 xmax is decent in the running. They might not be Avalanches but they won't cost as much. With multiple driver IB's cost is an issue (for me anyway). How much did the old Avalanches cost for it's 27.5 xmax? Originally somthing like $400? Lots of xmax costs lots of o money. Less xmax less money 120db it the sort of base that can hurt you ears (read plenty loud, like a rock concert where the bass player shakes the whole place and your ears ring that night). Don't worry about the in this type of box numbers. Ported v. Sealed v. Horn blah blah blah . You have to wait for the driver to come out and check out it's t/s numbers and cost. If the driver can be loud at 20hz it can be loud below 20hz. If you money is not the issue and are really set on more xmax per driver look at the Adire Tumult or Maelstrom18's that should be shipping soon.

It will have 18 mm Xmax.... When I compared to the Avalanches 27 mm Xmax, he explained... If the rest of the T/S parameters are favourable... it comes down to what it'll cost for 18mm of excursion (litres displacement)... I got my fingers crossed... new releases have been slow.... Rob

There is a post today on the www.soundillusions.net forum by Chad announcing the new subwoofer lines (along with a mid and tweeter). No T/S details yet. But there will be 4 different series of woofers and there's some loose, preliminary pricing info available. The 18" mentioned above is probably the Assault 18" for ~$200. From the very little info available, the Assault series seems to be the replacement for the Atlas series. It seems to be better in some ways and possibly worse in others: 2.5" voice coil - bigger than Atlas 2" 6.25" magnets - bigger than Atlas 6" No bottomless design - Atlas had this No "extremely flat frequency response" - is this Chad's way of saying it doesn't have the linear BL motor? We'll know more soon. For now we get just enough to whet our appetites.

I wonder why no 18" in the Arsenal series. It's a better featured, more expensive driver, so you'd think he'd offer it in an 18" if the Assault is offered in that size. Maybe if the cult members beg enough???

According to Dan Wiggins (and he should know), there's not much of a demand for expensive 18"s. And the tooling cost for them are quite a bit higher than 15"s
