How loud are the fans on the pro amps? I.E. Behringer, QSC, Samson. Is any one of these quieter than the others. Is the Crown K series that much better (sound quality, no fan) to justify the cost in an IB install?

Suffice to say they're all noisey. If you want dead quiet then the Crown is the way to go. I doubt that there is a significant difference in SQ between them when used to power a sub.

The Samson's are whisper quiet. I have the S700 and S1000 and you need to put your ear within 6" of the case to hear them at all. They aren't very flexible as far as impedance goes though.

I put my Behringer in an adjacent room. If it is at all possible to set yours up that way, you can save a ton of money by buying a pro amp and noise will be a non issue.

There is also the option of switching out the fan for a quieter unit. I did this on a QSC (JBL) amp that uses a 24V variable speed fan, and it did reduce the fan noise significantly. www3.sympatico.ca/bonaz/JBL/Quiet-fan-upgrade/Quiet-Fan.htm I've been running it for over a year without any over heating problems. Behringer units use 12V fans which is even easier to replace, given their compatibility with computer case fans. There is at one member here who is using a thermally controlled computer fan for even better noise reduction. If used in the same room, fanless amps have an advantage... but the cost difference has convinced me to find space in the adjoining room to isolate my next unit. Rob

Another testimonial for the Samsons. I can't hear a thing from my S700.

The Crown has a damping factor >3000. Behringer, QSC, & Samson are in the 300 range. Does this make a difference with an IB?

An IB is a more revealing sub than any other design. But I doubt that you'd hear a ton of difference.
Not to say that a K series amp aren't a very good choice. I'm close personal friends with one of the designers of the K series, and it pretty much defines state-of-the-art for that type of prosound amp.

What are you driving with the S700? 4 AE IB15's, wired in parallel. 350W to each of two pairs.
