Ok i just had a weird thought and wondered if it had any practical possibilities. If you replaced all the air in a sealed box with something less dense like helium or carbon dioxide, would it be like adding volume to the box? Theoretically you would be able to use more drivers in the same sized box, IB's included. ;D

Interesting idea although the box would probably have to be constructed with aluminum as MDF and other wood materials would be permeable over time. Even then you'd lose the gas through the membrane of the cone and surround etc since the surrounding atmosphere is a different gas than the interior.
Hm, after thinking about it I think you'd have a suspension issue...atmospheric pressure would be greater than the pressure inside the box which would cause the voice coil to be pushed slightly in at rest.
Wow, I might have learned something in science class afterall.
