Hey Thomas... not sure if you are familiar with Carlos Beltran of Accupower... they sell the Bully sub. He's dropped the price of these and claims they are a good sub for IB. The suggestion was made that you might would be willing to evaluate one. Carlos has volunteered to send you one (or would you need two). Not sure if you are up for this or not... you might PM him through the info in this thread www.hometheatershack.com/forums/subwoofers/895-bully-sub.html#post9450

Looking at the specs it seems to be a good candidate for IB but the SoundSplinter RL-P 15's are a better value with similar specs but better xmax and aluminum cone.

His posts seem a bit defensive. Then again, his product is being compared to a subwoofer that costs less and people are known to be happy with. It would be nice if someone who already has the SoundSplinters could/would do an AB comparison between thier drivers and the Bully in an IB. If one is already well aware of the sounds reproduced by the SoundSplinter, it would be easier for him to notice and differences in sound quality between the two.

I don't have a setup that allows comparison testing of larger drivers in an IB. That's why I didn't get involved with any of the testing of Hawthorne Audio drivers, nor have I gotten the Mach 5 18" driver.
No doubt Mr. Beltran's drivers will work in an IB, after all an IB is simply a big sealed box.
Whether his drivers are worth the cost difference compared to the competition, is something people need to decide on an individual basis.

Maybe we can get him to send Darren 4 of the Bully's since he has 4 SoundSplinters... if Darren is up to the task of swapping out his drivers.
Is there anyway to get notifications of replies? I've checked the box to bookmark the thread, but that doesn't seem to be the trigger.

I think I'm gonna have to decline the test. I'm not sure I'd be able to really give any good feedback on differences unless the Bully just underperformed terribly. Currently I wouldn't be able to measure accurately the differences with a radio shack SPL meter and distortion would be a by ear comparison and I hear none presently so I doubt I'd hear anything with the Bully.
Not sure I'd add any value.

I've checked the box to bookmark the thread, but that doesn't seem to be the trigger. A/B' ing attic mounted heavy 15"s probably isn't a realistic proposition. Also the effects of the room acoustics are going to be a far greater performance variable than test bench differences in driver distortion. Not sure about the notification, I'll take a look and see...

Spookey! The bookmarking/notifiation has never worked before. I looked in the admin general setting area but there wasn't anything related to this. So nothing is accidently turned off Perhaps it's the power of positive thinking.... ;D

Not sure about the notification, I'll take a look and see... If I'm out of line here I plead ignorance... Rather than climbing into attics to prepare for an A/B test, perhaps an option might to be load say, 4 units (two of each brand) on a baffle large enough to fit in a doorway. Slide the baffle into place and seal it off, allowing the drivers to vent into an adjacent room. A/B testing should be about as accurate as you're going to get, as the drivers are within close proximity of each other and will use the same "enclosure". They will also be the same distance from the listener and should be affected by the room in the same manner. The ultimate thing would be to have an electronic switching device that will short out the coils of the units not in use. that will ensure no interaction between active and non-active units. Ah, you guys have probably already thought of this. ;D Best, Mark

In my case the doorway is about 8 feet by 8 feet Open to another room.

I should have added that I could have volunteered to do the Bully comparison in my array but seriously doubt Carlos would like the freight costs to Europe. (I don't like them either!) It would probably have to be one-way journey with a very large discount for bulk buying 4. ;D

I also thought of that the first time I saw the poster's name.
