I have been looking for good IB woofers a while now and I have learned that the given Xmax can either be the total excursion of the cone or +/- . When I try to ask the distributor what "version" xmax their woofer has, I feel i dont get truthful answers, mostly because they dont know. For example, the dayton IB15 has a given xmax of 14.3, so is this +/- 14.3 or +/- 7.15 ? from the looks of its thin foam surround I would say the latter.

The IB15 has a one-way Xmax of 14.3mm. This means a P-P of 28.6mm

Have you measured this yourself Thomas? if not, then I have a hard time believing that the IB15 has +/- 14.3 mm The peerless xxls (xpanded xtra long stroke) 12" has a xmax of +/- 12.5 mm www.tymphany.com/datasheet/pdf/pl/830847.pdf and ofcourse the norwegian reseller say on their website that it has a 25 mm xmax, this is what ticks me off. When you look at the picture of the xxls, you see it has possibilities of long strokes, but when I look at the IB15 I dont see the same qualities, at least not 14.3 one way xmax.

Parts Express publishes the specs for it's drivers using the industry standard. This means Xmax is a one-way measurement.
And any drivers PE has sent in for Dumax testing have confirmed the PE specs are usually a bit conservative.
Using a picture of a 15" and that of a 12" probably isn't the best approach for determining Xmax.

Can you determine the actual Xmax by plugging the size and displacement of the woofer into some kind of formula? I've noticed that the displacement of all 15" woofers is different, and it always goes up as the Xmax goes up, so I figure there must be something to that. Am I crazy?

No because Xmax is defined as when the VC is in the magnetic gap and that must be measured.

Hi all All I can say is you get what you pay. I bought 4 IB15's (good deal) but they require more than 96db/octave EQ !.... And even then are hard to listen to .... I agree with egg, a IB15 really does not have much execution...never seems to bottom though.....problem is the are not airy like the tumult and do not take me to that place I like to be I have 4 adire tumults.....there are not cheap but they require very little EQ and can move 33mm one way...66 total.....they take me that place I like to be ...no matter what source I apply to them. Even 2 tumults are far superior to the 4 IB15's Shipping is a downfall with the tumults as they weight about 60lbs each. If I could figue out how to attach image I would...hehehe

I've never heard a subwoofer defined as "airy"

If I could figure out how to attach image I would...hehehe If you browse for Image Shack (or any other online hosting service) you can " Browse" and " Host It" [wait for uploading of your image from your own computer] Then Copy the Direct Link URL and Paste it into the space provided when you click on the picture postcard above the Cult Forum message box. Check with "Preview" that you can see your image before " Posting Reply". If you can't see your image in Preview you may have extras either end of your (img) & (/img) link which need to be deleted.
