im just starting out with HT - i have these two drivers that i aquired in a trade with my brother about 12 years ago...and im pretty sure they quit being manufactured shortly there after because i can find little info about them - they are Radioshack(i know) #40-1309 18" woofers -- they have never been hooked up...still in original packaging - it comes with a couple of "reccommended" enclosure designs neither of which i like - i started searching for some ideas on the net and stumbled upon you guys and started reading about IB -- these are stated as "free air" woofers but i know the acutal parameters of the speaker is what determines a suitable driver....this is the only info i have on them mainly because they no longer exist:
Radio Shack Cat, No. 40-1309 (18" Subwoofer)
Nominal Impedance........................... 8 ohms
DC Resistance (RE)............................ 6.83 ohms
Free Air Response............................. 16.5 hz
Equivalent Air Volume(VAS)............... 41 Ft3
Moving Mass (Mms)........................... 192.6 Grams
Mechanical Q (QMS)........................... 1.986
Electrical Q (QES)............................... 0.225
Total Q (QTS)..................................... 0.20
Peak Power Handling........................ 200 Watts
Peak-to-Peak Linear Excursion(XD)... 6.1 mm
Gap Flux Density(BG)......................... 7850 Gauss (+/- 200 Gauss)
i already own these drivers so even though they may not be "ideal" drivers for IB...id like to try them out - would any of you discourage this?? does anyone know what kind of results i can expect?? I have a buddy who has done his own IB with 2 Tempest 15" and i had him come over to my new house and look at my planned location and thinks it is favorable and he seems encouraged by the drivers - i really wanted to mount these right on the wall with the cones exposed to the room simply because of the cone size....it will look impressive....but im now thinking a manifold design will be better so i can easily just change the setup if im unhappy with these speakers -- anyway i was just hoping that someone could look at the #'s (i have no clue what they mean) and advise me on whether these are acceptable candidates or just a waste of my time and effort!! - i will be powering these with 2 Marantz ME-500 - i have an old 10 band EQ that i can put inline with the sub amps to help boost some of the low end where some think these speakers will fail - any thought would be appreciated
