The lightning strikes when Tom Cruise is outside with daughter. The really deep bass hits from the lightning when they are inside. First tripod coming out of the ground. Continued.

Yeah, it's official, this thing is NUTS! BEWARE, this is the first time I've heard my IB protest, I think it may have bottomed, even though I thought Avalanche 18 was bottomless. I for sure heard a clack of some kind. I have a huge room and I'm only running 2, so hopefully no one else will have this problem, but man, before it clacked this thing was taking my house down. The offending scene, in case you want to test it JMan, was seconds after the overpass bridge is destroyed along with Tom Cruise's neighboorhood as they are driving to safety. All hell and LFE breaks loose then. The scenes you tested already were good too. Highly recommended. I'll let you know some others later, this was just a rent, but now it's a buy!

This is the part where they are in the basement of the ex-wife's house.

Holy Cow, I think if anyone is running their IB's even a few db's hot they need to dial it back. This is just out of control . Lucas should fire his sound engineers and hire Speilberg's!

My dual 18" dipole subs give some nice rumble and shake in this movie but some scenes like the one just above had almost nothing audible. I need that deep IB extension

Fired this DVD up tonight without knowing how hot the mix was...and, yes, I do run movies like this "hot".
I knew the IB drivers were straining, probably past xmax. After a few seconds, for the first time ever, the 10 amp line fuse in my subwoofer amplifier blew...that pretty much confirms xmax +.
That's eighteen 15" subwoofers in full song folks! As far as I know, this is the first time anything has pushed them so hard.
BTW, the amp and drivers are fine...just replaced the fuse and turned down the level, a little.

f 18 15" drivers can't handle WOTW then what on earth can? I don't know what volume you were running at but I just can't imagine how a setup this insane still wouldn't be able to handle anything thrown at it at much higher than reference level down to say 15hz.
I was seriously thinking about an IB in my home but this has me very worried now. If you could please tell me, what 15" drivers are you using and what is the linear excursion on these drivers? Thanks.
--Sincerely.

Watched this last night. Holy moly! LFE bass fest. PaulW what drivers are you using? This movie mix is already way hot so I can understand why your IB went on strike. BTW my bfd was in the red for short periods [clipping] will this damage anything? If so I will turn the amp up a notch.

10 amps is only 1200 watts, for 18 drivers? That's only 67 watts each.

Vaughn, this thread should not sway you from an IB, but drive you towards one. If you don't go the IB route you are going to miss all the bass this kind of movie offers. Once I had the volume loud, but not insane, the movie rocked.

I was seriously thinking about an IB in my home but this has me very worried now. One thing to keep in mind here is that Paul has 14,000 cubic feet to pressurize! A room 30 x 31 x 15 is 13,950 cu. ft. This is close to double what most people's 'big' rooms are!

WOTWs is a great dvd . Is the bass hot or is it normal, and all the other frequencies turn down? It seems like I had to play this at a way higher setting out of the processor for the dialog to dound loud enough? The bass does reach down deep though I had glasses rattling off end tables.

The sensitivity of each of his 2 cluster of drivers is around 100dB 1W/1M
No other sub can play this low. Well none other than the $13K Thigpen rotary sub...

So 103db for both,
103 - 1 watt 106 - 2 109 - 4 112 - 8 115 - 16 118 - 32 121 - 64 124 - 128 127 - 256 130 - 512 133 - 1024 watts
Say 127db at 2m. Pretty loud peaks no?

Paul's clusters are too far apart to acoustically couple except at VERY low frequencies On another forum Paul has posted that people sitting on the sofa get weirded out, because the output from the sub causes the sofa to move across the floor. He worries because the windows flex ...

Given that movies like War of the Worlds have significant content in the 5-10hz range, would it be wise for us to use some highpassing? I still have an ART351 kicking around that has a variable highpass filter that can be set as low as 10hz. Do these uber low frequencies add anything to the movie experience?

Really low frequencies shake the room and everything in it. They use up excursion and amplifier power.
If you find that you're running out of excursion or clipping the amp, a rumble filter is a good idea
