HI, my current system has 3 15" planet audio in a sealed enclosure. but It is not loud enough for me.
I am planning on doing an IB system with 4 mj-18. I am going to use one of those buttkicker amplifiers.
im having trouble convincing myself and others that IB systems actually sound good becuase I have done free air systems in car trunks and they allways sound terrible, can someone please explain this to me.
can an IB system compete with a ported box for spl?
and yes I did read the faq

I am going to use one of those buttkicker amplifiers. That probably won't be enough given your first statement. But then again I have no idea what a 15" Planet audio is...Not sure what to say other than the obvious, there's a huge difference between the acoustical environment of a car and that of a house.Certainly if there's adequate displacement.

im bassically just wondering if four of those mj-18's would be loud enough for me in a IB setup. my 3 15 planet audios are fairly loud and sound really good but I would like louder. heres the specs on the planet audios www.planetaudiousa.com/support/index.php?_m=downloads&_a=downloadfile&downloaditemid=65and these are the specs for the mj-18 Fs = 30.4 Hz Re = 7.2 Ohms[dc] Qt = 0.35 Qes = 0.39 Qms = 3.41 Mms = 219.3 grams Rms = 12.3 kg/s Cms = 0.000100 m/N Vas = 243.8 liters Sd= 1029.22 cm2 Bl = 27.625095 Tm ETA = 1.07 % Xmax = 12mm Diameter= 36.20 cm

Measure the output from your existing subs at the listening position.
Next put the T/S parameters of the Mach5 18"s into Unibox or WinISD Pro alpha. This will give an anechoic sim of the output of the IB.
Finally put the T/S parameters of the existing drivers into the box sim program.
Comparing the differences between the two sims, and comparing the sim of the existing sub with the real world measurements, will give you a good idea as to how the IB will perform in comparsion to your current subs.

As far as the freeair in a car goes it takes a lot of work to seal the trunk from the passenger compartment. I did a pontiac in the early 80s with 2 15"s behind the back seat. I used about 6 cans of expando foam in the side panels above the wheel wells and got a complete isolation from the trunk. The bass was unbelievable and impressed everyone that heard it.
In your house the bass from an IB is so effortless that it is hard to explain to someone who hasn't heard it. Without all the exaggerated midbass making the midrange image get lost the overall sound is like no other system.
