Remember, "Think outside the box"!
Hi, I have 2 brand-new pairs of Scan Speak 21w8555-00-08 just laying around not doing anything. I've tried selling them, nobody seems to be interested even at a greatly reduced price! Anyway, I'm now thinking of installing a HT set-up in our bedroom and utilizing these woofers for the low-end. There is an attic hatch just on the inside of our walk-in closet that I could very easily make use of to mount the manifold. I don't need the system to rattle the house but just to add some of the low-end to movies at a moderate level. Our HT receiver is a Marantz SR-19EX with 130 watts x 5. The receiver has no crossover or LFE control other than the 'distance in feet' for each channel including the LFE I know of. I'm thinking of using the CSS FR125S 4" fullrange driver in all 5 positions. So, here's my question: I know these drivers don't measure up to your standards, and you would never consider using them but, will they work? Our bedroom is 14.5' x 11.5' x 8'. The attic area is around 1400 ~ 1500 square feet. I will also need a plate amp of some sort with all the bells and adjustments... Any and all help will be greatly accepted! Thanks! Brian

Build a ported box.

I once tried a similar low dicplacement IB because i had a dayton quatro 15" hanging around. The quatro had about 25% more dicplacement than your four 8"ers have, and it put out very little bass. Probably no more than about 90db and only extended to mabe 30 or so hz.
I agree with ThomasW that the smart thing to do would be to build a ported box.

Well, thanks for the advice. I guess the drivers will sit around some more. I really would like to try IB so I guess I'll have to take the plunge and get a pair of Mach 5 MJ-18's. Brian

That's a much better idea.... Your 8" ScanSpeaks would be paperweights after the first bass transient were they IB mounted.

Hello nelsondog, I know we all talk about Darla Taps that invite the EPA to your house or how the depth charge in U-571 will rattle the teeth out of your head but at very low volume the IB is even more impressive because of its effortless ability to reproduce subtle detail in the low frequency range. Take the plunge--Go Big

Our HT receiver is a Marantz SR-19EX with 130 watts x 5. The receiver has no crossover or LFE control other than the 'distance in feet' for each channel including the LFE I know of. Can you recommend the proper amp with the controls I may need?

Why do you want a plate amp with an IB sub?

What else would I use that has some sort of control over the LFE?

A Marantz SR-19EX is a Dolby Digital receiver by definition any DD receiver has a sub output. What more control do you want? The sub out is the crossover

It has a signal output no power though...130 x 5 = 2 fronts, 2 rears, 1 center...

That means you can use any power amp, it doesn't need to be a plate amp.
How much is a Behringer A500 in Canada?

No doubt you need an amp for the sub. Most people use prosound power amplifiers for their IB setups, a plate amp will work, but usually prosound amps are better suited either for monetary reasons or such. A very popular amp to check out is the Behringer Europower 2500. www.behringer.com/EP2500/index.cfm?lang=ENGThis amp is a really good price for the power it can provide.

It looks like your Marantz has everything you could want. I can't see that you have a crossover point adjustment, it looks like it is locked at 80Hz. You can work around this if you need to with an external Crossover like the Behringer units. Check to see if you have metel U shaped jumpers on the upper left side of the back connecting the Pre-out to Pre-in. If you do have them you will have lots of connection options.
