Funny, I remember reading that article when it was first published. Thanks for posting the link as I lost the magazine long ago....
We had subs in the late 60's early 70's, in those days a system flat to 20Hz was an eye opener...
The original IB subs were wall mounted JBL or Altec Lansing 15"s used to augment monaural 'Hi-Fi' systems. I remember hearing one of the systems as a small child, it was owned by one of my Uncle's friends.

It looks like there are two 24" subs in each door in a line array. I am not sure how this works unless the doors are really solid and there are several locking mechanisms.

Over the years we've had several people do door based IB subs. Just takes a solid core door, heavy duty (roller bearing) hinges, and usually a caster on the leading edge of the door at the floor to hold the weight of the door when open
