I am very aware it is not advised to use different drivers in ib setups. I am doing two manifolds of the same four drivers in my crawlspace(i hope). I also have two unused maelstrom x 18's that had the failure of the shorting ring. There may be a fix for that failure. If so, could I get away with putting my maelstroms in another manifold in my wall? What drawbacks would there be?

I don't know of any drawbacks,...other than the wasted motor size of the driver, ...which isn't being used anyway, so at least you'd be using it.
I'd be interested in your fix for the shorting ring, I wasn't aware of such a reliable fix. I'd think if the re-adhesion depended on thermal properties of the usage, the IB alignment would lend itself to limiting the heat associated with the typical application of the small sealed use of the driver.
Good luck and keep us updated

If you have the ability to adjust power levels (output) and EQ separately for the drivers, it's likely they could be integrated into the system.
It's very dissimilar drivers that pose the greatest problems. In this instance the drivers aren't all that different.

FOH- guy posted on avs about doing it to his 21 inch maelstrom dripping a bit of super glue onto the ring. I propose trying in with a higher quality low viscocity epoxy. It sounds tricky and there is a lot that could go wrong, but they are just paperweights right now. Also, like said before, temps would be lower in an ib setup vs sealed.

I run two sets of four, very different, 15" drivers in my IB.
The main problem, I found, is deciding where in their frequency response to balance them. This is further complicated if any VLF boost applied to better match their response curves. One can easily run into a situation where one set is just loafing. While the other is making very large excursions.
I wouldn't say that either set sounds very different to each other in an IB crossed over at ~80Hz.
Though they sound different if the crossover point is raised significantly to use them as woofers. This is hardly likely to arise in IB use.
Good luck with your repair.
