I am considering using steel piping welded together to support my flat baffle. The piping is to prevent the MDF from flexing.
Right now I’m designing the flat baffle to be 3 inches thick MDF, with 1x1 hollow tube welded together around the inside edge of the baffle, and one strip between the two subs. I’ll weld the bracing together and attach it to the baffle with bolts. The bracing will then be attach it to a foundation.
Is the piping overkill? I’d like there to be no flex. Flexing of the wood will potentially cause issues with the surrounding glass. I just do not believe 3”of MDF will be strong enough to prevent flex. Pointing the two 18” subs at each other is not an option, it must be a flat sheet (40”x20”)
Thoughts?
Thanks.

First how about being considerate and post all your questions in one thread. That way the forum isn't littered with lots of short threads...
As far as I'm concerned pipe seems pointless. If you want a stiffer baffle use plywood instead of MDF.
Let's see a picture of the proposed place for installing this IB

Inconsiderate/litter? I must have overlooked the rules about how many threads a person can post per day(s)? Rather than having me guess what the rules are for posting a new thread, how about you spell them out in clear terms. How much time between posts would you deem appropriate for a new thread? (i.e. Hours, minutes, days, years?) However, "Post all your questions in one thread" would suggest I create only one thread and keep updating that thread with new ideas\thoughts\questions for the life of this account?
I guess I fail to see how two completely different subjects/thoughts should be on one thread. One thread with 2+ different subjects can become unwieldy, and would appear scattered and less organized. Sometimes locking a thread is needed if the community gets heated and off subject. If a thread with many different questions/thoughts is locked all thoughts would be shut down which could become frustrating for the community. But to address this as inconsiderate, and call my thoughts "litter" seem to come off as obtuse.
ThomasW-- That's WONDERFUL news regarding the plywood strength over MDF! Just looked up the strength difference between ply and MDF -- that's awesome! Maybe I can get away without using a pipe bracing after all. Thanks for your guidance ThomasW!
The IB setup is not popular, so it's tough to find people that are knowledgeable outside of the Cult, and it's tough to pull the trigger on something that is only touted by a few (cult) as teeth rattling, gut punching, loud. It's that hesitation that making me ensure I dot i's and cross t's. It will be a few months before I pull the trigger and begin the process. But once the trigger is pulled there will be many photos and many measurements taken.
Thanks,

No comments were made regarding anyone's thoughts.
The idea behind the my projects section is to have all questions asked and answered regarding any particular project located in one thread. That way readers can follow along without having to search all over the forum to connect the dots.
