I have seen in a couple of spots on here that people say that car speakers are not suitable for Ib use but has anyone entertained the thought of useing a car sub that was designed for IB? I know that Kicker made one an dI also think Cadence did too. Has anyone seen this done? I am soon going to load up a couple of 15" Kicker Solobarics into my fireplace for a super cheap, considering that I already own the woofers, IB suitable for a rental house! I'll let you know how bad it sounds! Zach

Some car woofers are fine for use in a home IB. Others are very questionable. The SQ of course depends on the specific driver being used.

I am also considering using car subwoofers, but I have a hard time finding any with a low Fs, I find drivers that can move a lot of air but they tend to have Fs above 30. Is there anyway to "mod" these drivers to go lower? btw I live in Norway and there is not many pure IB subs to choose from.

To date there's really no such thing as a "pure" IB driver. There are simply drivers that are better optimized to work in an IB. Any good subwoofer, whether it's intended for car or home use will work in an IB.
People tend to fixate on Fs, and it's really not that big a deal. Drivers can and do play lower than their Fs.
One can lower the Fs of any driver by adding mass to the cone. The side effects of this are the efficiency goes down and as a result there's increased strain on the suspension.
So look around and see what you can find. Post the T/S parameters and we'll see which will work best.

What would be great is if a couple of you could give us your "perfect" driver's T/S parameters. I would then be able to see the tradeoffs I would make with any real speaker. Zach

:)Howdy ya'll, Awaiting the day to put my 6 Adire DPL12's into an I.B... My mains are RD75's ,maggie ribbons, maggie bass panels. I'll post a better description later... I've recently purchased a used REaudio xxx18" ;D; displacement 7.7L, placed it in a 8 cu. ft. (6 cu. ft. internal) well braced, heavily damped sealed cabinet. Luckily finding an Carver Sunfire plate amp. 800 wts. r.m.s./2700 wts. peak- By adding mass(total grms. x2), with black modeling clay, the Fo drops (30%)to 20 hz.- the Q raises(40%) to .84 and the spl drops(6dbl) to 86 db. with a quad 1 ohm. v.c. in series to 4 ohms. the BL is raised dramatically. A gargantuan version of Bob Carvers sealed miniature wonder. This monster rocks!!!King Kong is alive and loose in the living room! The sunfire with its 36db./oct. crossover, generous power and phase control. Is totally amazing- with no mass, the gain turned way down to like 3 out of 15- listening at about 105 db? (no measuring devices yet.)it shakes everything in the house! 1600 sq. ft. with 50% 16' cathedral ceilings. I'm afraid to really open it up and have everything flying off the walls. A pretty new house, i've already noticed alot of recent cracks in various drywall. (Glad i'm renting, for now) The funny thing is , i haven't added but only little mass, running a stereophile sweep- It puts out a very strong level: 20hz.- without breaking a sweat. I'm pretty sure it'll do 10hz! :'(The 18 " supersub is now downright frightening! I've never heard better bass- Even in the best premier movie theaters.... Simply ASTOUNDING! For those wanting to experiment - "fear this." What are you waiting for? You'll become s-o-o-o-o addicted to bass, a whole new realm will transform every piece of source- you will absolutely love the wavefronts as the air finally shudders all about you, engaging you in a truly tactile experience!. Thank you Thomas for all your devotion and extremely generous heart. We love ya! ~Dean

Other than the color the driver looks okay.... There's no reason or fundamental benefit to adding mass. You can accomplish the same thing by simply using EQ. Drivers in an IB (or any other sealed box) can play much lower than their Fs, and doing so isn't a problem. The basis for the Bag End ELF subs is taking a sealed box and using EQ to force the driver to play much lower than it's Fs. As I recall the entire passband for the ELF subs is lower than the driver's Fs Drivers mounted in ported boxes do what's called "unload" when played lower than the tuning frequency. This simply isn't the case with IB (sealed box) mounted drivers
