The last time I looked into Tempests they were about $150. Now they are $249. What happened? What IB drivers are you recommending in the $150 range? I'm going to start with 2 or 3 and possibly add 2 more.  |

Buy the Parts Express DVC 15" if you want drivers like the original Tempests

Nope, but Adire discontinued them a year ago when they stopped using Eminence to make their drivers and opened a plant in Chile.

Thomas,
You said that when you changed from the Shiva's to DPL 12's(?) that you had to eq less. Why do you think that that happened?
Is there any reason that you don't use 15 in. drivers?

DPL12"s have a lower Fs, so I needed a bit less bottom-end EQ.
The big IB was built early in 2000. At that time there were no, good quality, reasonably priced 15"s around. Actually Shiva's were a fairly new item on the market. And my pockets weren't deep enough to use the $400ea TC-Sounds 15"s Nousaine used.

OK, I've just about got myself talked into adding an IB to my system. Which drivers to use?
2 or 3 SS RLP 15's Which ones? 2 ohm or 4 ohm
or
O-Audio TC2+ 15"SVC (TC-Sounds)--Lower FS does it make a big difference?
or
Other suggestions
I have an Ultracurve 2496 and a Sunfire Sig. amp with 3 channels that I could use. 400 watts into 8 ohms, 800 watts into 4 ohms and I think 1600 watts into 2 ohms.
I am currently using an M&K 350 in a 5,000 cu. ft room. I swear it bottoms out during the opening of Tina Turner Live in Amsterdam.

Dual 2 ohm give you 1 ohm or 4 ohm wiring options, the dual 4 ohm are of course 2 ohm or 8 ohm
Lower Fs means somewhat less EQ will be needed in the lowest octaves.
That wouldn't surprise me

Is the displacement going to be the same? Assuming that it is the same, I am comparing the DVC 15 to O-Audio's TC2+ QTS FS Displacement Cost 5 DVC 15 .38 20.4 12.77 $525 3 TC2+ .37 17.7 9.27 $600 So what am I getting with the TC2+? Is the lower FS a big deal? When you changed to the DPL 12’s you must have thought that the lower FS was very significant. Will the extra 3 liters of displacement make up for the higher FS? Is the biggest factor in an IB displacement? Thanks, Jim |

I didn't say it was identical to the Tempest. I said it's the closest you'll find.
You can calculate the Vd by multiplying the Sd times the peak to peak Xmax. (Xmax times 2)
No, actually I didn't give it much thought. I simply got them at a price I couldn't refuse. So after 5 yrs of use I installed new drivers.
Having a lower Fs just isn't that big a deal.
The TC2+ is a much better built driver than the DVC-15

If there's adequate space behind the woofers for the 10 times Vas rule I'd choose the TC2+.
The RL-p 15 is a TC9. It's a good choice if one has a smaller space and wants to use only a couple drivers that can take a pounding

www.acoustic-visions.com sells the new Tempest for $229.00 shipping included. They only have the dual 4 ohm version at this time. That shipping cost can really add up if it is not included. I bought the older Tempest from this place and they were good to deal with.

8 years ago I made 2 subs designed by www.decware.com--Housewreakers--an isobaric design. They each had 2 15 in. pro drivers by Eminence. I don’t think the 4 drivers combined had a displacement of 1 liter. How is 1 TC2+ 15’s going to compare in db at the low end to 4 drivers by Eminence? Is VD the main issue? I have a 5,000 cu ft. room now, and a 2,000 cu. Ft room before. I also have a M&K 350--I had before-- which will be used mainly for active cancellation before the EQ is applied. When is enough, enough. I want a flat response from about 15 hz up. |

This is what my room looks like now with just the M&k 350 in it. I used a RS meter, figured in correction, a NCH tone generator and 1 hz resolution. Yes, I know that I need alot more bass traps. It is a very difficult room.  |

One more question about an IB. If the driver is in a space exposed to outside temperatures can you build a blanket of insulation around the driver to stop the cold and heat from coming through?

How well would they integrate with my two existing Tempests? I always planned on using another two Tempests to complete my cube manafold when I could afford it, but now it looks like I need to change my plans.

If you take the time to compare the T/S parameters, you'll find they're more alike than they are different.
