Just curious, anything further on an Aussie distributor ship yet? Norpus, you have a pm too. Merry Christmas all. I'm finalizing one. Understand it will still take some time to get product into country. That Pacific Ocean is pretty big.

Finally a decent big driver to be distributed Down Under!! awesome, just thought I'd show my interest from Melbourne Australia. cheerz, Dwayno The prices won't be the same as North American prices but it should still be attractive. I would guess they will be 25-35% higher than the US pricing. Compared to what it would cost me to ship them to Australia its a down right bargain and you will have local support in case there is ever a problem. Just imagine trying to ship a 70lb driver back over the ocean at a cost of $250 each way for a warranty issue. Same with Europe, the cost in Europe is higher because of the distribution cost, taxes and extra freight. Overall in both markets they should remain a great value though. I've been quoted final pricing so my $350ish USD number for the North American market is looking pretty good. We are still tweaking the design a little bit though so we are prototyping another sample. Might be March 08 before I see product.

Yes I can confirm there will be these available in the New Year out of Aussie. Can't say from whom until I get the nod from that party. But yes, good news for us Aussie IB peeps. I will keep you informed when allowed to reveal. Sorry not trying to be cryptic - just don't want to steal anothers thunder Great choice of distributor also diycable IMO.

Stuart just replied his website is up and running so I can now spill the beans. (Sorry I couldn't before) Yes here is the new Aust agent for the new Tempest-X and Shiva-X sub drivers - as designed by Dan Wiggins and marketed by diycable Kevin Haskins www.audiomarketplace.com/At $350AUD, these are better value than what I paid for my Tempest 15D8 from the previous Adire agent (they were $380 for the lesser driver with only 18mm xmax). I find this good value as in my earlier post above, I found just the shipping for 2 drivers to Aust was horrendous at >USD500 I'm sure these will make an even better diy IB option than the previous tempests (4.2ltr vs 2.8). I ordered two tonight via this website to replace my existing tempests. And if/when the 18" maelstroms surface later, they will hopefully provide yet another good option for us Aussie diys.

Alright ..... At least the Oz subwoofer driver drought is solved....

Yes.... I'm pleased that Audiomarketplace is now part of the Exodus family. We now have distribution in North America, Europe, Australia & New Zealand.
Their first shipment of drivers should be in country by Feb. More to follow shortly there-after.
The Maelstrom-X is roughly on schedule. I'd guess March/April before they show up in Oz.
I'm also working on a DPL-15 which is a dipole/IB specific driver. It will use a smaller motor than the Tempest-X (driver should be about 18lbs), larger pole vent, high Qts, low fs, single 8 Ohm VC, very open basket etc... It will of course use an XBL^2 motor with the AlCu Inductance optimization tricks that Wiggins has been working on over the last year or so.
It should offer industry leading value for IB subs. I'm aiming for $25/L shipped in North America in four-packs.

Kevin-
Would the Shiva's be well suited for mid-bass arrays?
I'm thinking about doing 2 dipole cabinets with either 2 or 4, 12" drivers each. It would run from 50-150hz or so (perhaps 80-200, 50-200, etc).
My IB would cover 10-80, and then my Mackies would do 200hz-20khz.

WooHoo big drivers are finally coming to OZ, Norpus have you let all at SNA know yet, won't be for a few months till i take the dive but still not sure if i should go two 18" or 4 15" any way renovations look like they are going to be upset hehehe. Cheerz Dwayno Happy New Year

Dwayno, the 2 x 18s should be roughly same price or less than 4 Tempests, but would take less effort to make and fit for 2 in the manifold (albeit 3" larger dimension).
Personally I like the 18s I have over the 15's, but the 18s have XBL2 so not sure if that was a factor also. I'll let you know if it was after I get the Tempest-Xs installed replacing the Tempest 15D8s.
Either option, 2 x 18 or 4 x 15 you can't go wrong, bang for buck, IMHO.

You would never push them in terms of excursion. They would be operating WELL within their linear limits. Should be an extremely low-distortion application.

Some updates on these. Basically we are still finalizing the design and we have had to go to a third prototype before finalizing it. This is pushing the ship date to April 2008. Parameters are getting pretty firm though and I'm happy with what we have. This is a dual 8 ohm VC design like the Shiva-X & Tempest-X. Parameters with VC in parallel. Re: 3.1 Ohm Le: 2.65 mH Fs: 16.3 Hz Qms: 5.39 Qes: .39 Qts: .36 Mms: 475g Cms: .200 mm/N Vas: 327L Sd: 1080 cm^2 X-Max: 33mm X-Mech: 41mm BL: 19.66 Spl: 87.5 1W/1M Vd: 7.1L Wow.... this is serious output. The Tempest-X is no slouch at 4.3L of swept volume. The old Tumult had 5.0L so this is a driver reaching the limits of what can be done with traditional suspension components. We can design more motor travel but it becomes less and less usable due to the limitations of how much power can realistically be used in a driver (you need 1800W to reach full excursion in some designs @ 15A breakers are becoming a limit) and suspension components that operate well under >60mm of P-P displacement. I don't care how many spiders & what you do with the surround, they become non-linear the more you push them and the self-noise increases with throw so there are limits to what can be done with traditional suspension components and we are pushing up against them. The motor BL is linear to within 10% out to about 27mm with the 30% down being our X-max. The inductance is managed with our AlCu motor technology that balances the Le curve for symmetry using variable width & thickness shorting rings made of either copper or aluminum depending upon the need. The VC is a 3" all copper design with black anodized aluminum former for maximum heat dissipation. Overall we pulled out all the stops on this one. Notice in the sectional drawing below both the notches cut for the XBL^2 motor and the two shorting rings of differing size/materials. This is all carefully designed to minimize inductance & BL based non-linearities. Not your run of the mill motor design. This is working in slighly smaller boxes than the Tempest-X. Looks good in anywhere from 7-10 cubic feet for vented/PR alignments and it likes to be tuned down around 16-17Hz. Its going to take a PR or a big slot port because your not going to fit a big enough port with this kind of displacement in the smaller size boxes. You should be able to port the upper 10-12 cubic foot designs. I have a 15" PR in the works but it will take four of them to keep this beast happy. No immediate plans for an 18" PR as two 15"s are cheaper and work well with the Tempest-X & Shiva-X also. Price is holding steady @ $349 and they will probably start shipping sometime in April/May.

Dwayno, the 2 x 18s should be roughly same price or less than 4 Tempests Yay After finally completing my IB, forces beyond my control mean that we may be shifting house in the nearish future, which meant having to pull out the jaycars and bring them with me - and packing and shifting 8 15" drivers isn't trivial. But if there's a replacement available then I can leave the jaycars in place if the new buyer wants them and build a new IB in our new house using the 18s
